Ahmed and His Family Fleeing the Sudanese Civil War

Donation protected
Hello everyone,

This is Ahmed Abakar Hassan, who needs your help to raise money for his family who are fleeing from war-torn Sudan. The Sudanese civil war has already taken the lives of 2 of his brothers and many others since it broke out on 15 April 2023, with UN officials calling it “one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

The last time Ahmed saw his wife and two young daughters was 2 and a half years ago and out of fear for their safety, he has had to pay over £20,000 to transport them out of Sudan to Chad. Drivers take advantage of people’s suffering to scam and overcharge, whilst transporting people under inhumane circumstances.

However, this doesn’t mean they are now safe. Refugee camps in Chad are not equipped to house the influx of refugees and are at critical capacity and running out of aid. Videos sent from Ahmed’s family show how bad the conditions are in the camp, without proper facilities as people lie on the floor with their wounds exposed in serious need of medical attention. Ahmed’s family have no way of earning an income to sustain themselves in the camp and with UN aid only providing merely £10 a month, Ahmed has taken on the financial burden to support his family. He is currently supporting more than 50 family members, including 5 sisters, 4 brothers, 5 aunties, 2 uncles and >40 children, sending money over to Chad every month. Last month he sent £600, of which £460 went to his family and £140 went to other wounded refugees in the camp that are unable to get medical treatment.

Since my time working alongside Ahmed at HOME, he has always been known as one of the hardest working people on the team. He normally works more than 50 hours every week, however with recent structural changes in work, coupled with long-standing health problems, he has been left with unstable employment. Ahmed has plans to get security qualifications to help him find a more stable job, but to do so he will need to spend a big chunk of money from an already very tight pot.

Ahmed has tried contacting local authorities, his local MP and Charities like the Red Cross and Revive but none of these organisations has been able to provide help or even advice on the matter. The Red Cross and Revive have come back to Ahmed saying that because he is a British Citizen, they cannot offer any help, even if his immediate family are currently refugees. Ahmed’s elder daughter is reaching school age (8 years old) and being in a refugee camp means that she doesn’t have access to education at all.

It has been over a year from today since the war started and it is increasingly unlikely there will be an end to the conflict any time soon. With the harsh government policy on immigration that came into effect last month, the hopes of reuniting Ahmed with his family is becoming increasingly unlikely. With the money raised from this fundraiser, Ahmed hopes to continue supporting his family for the next few months and potentially relocate them to somewhere with access to education for his kids.

Any amount would be greatly appreciated by Ahmed and his family, as would any wishes of love and support.

Thank you for reading and please feel free to share this fundraiser with anyone you know.

I have worked with Ahmed closely for over a year and has stayed friends since. The fund raised would be used to provide basic needs for Ahmed's family in Chad, for example food, water and medication for the next few months.
