Aid Bruce Takens' Healing Journey

Hi, as most of you know my brother in law Bruce Takens had a heart attack Friday October 11. They had gone out for dinner and had plans to run errands. Bruce said he just wanted to go home and get some things done so they started their drive home. Just after getting off the highway he started feeling chest pain and numbness behind his arms. Cheryl asked him if she should drive and if they should go to ER. He said he just wanted to go home and get some heartburn meds. As they continued towards home he seemed to get worse. She asked him to pull over and they switched drivers. Cheryl called 911 and drove him to Zeeland hospital. Things moved very quickly as people were swarming to care for him. Within a few minutes of arrival he coded for 4-6 min. Social workers asked Cheryl to call family. They were able to get his heart to start beating again and they were told Aeromed would be picking him up to bring him to Lena Meijer Heart. Cheryl was to meet him there and wait for him to get out of the cath lab. Aeromed tried to land on the rooftop but for some reason the pilot chose not to land and took him to the Ford airport instead (we were told this never happens). Their was an ambulance that picked him up at the airport and took him to the hospital. After arrival he went straight I the cath lab. Unfortunately, he had too much disease in his heart to do a stent. They put a balloon in place to help the heart until he could have surgery. Surgery took place Sunday and they did a triple bypass with ablation for AFib. He is doing well but is looking at a hospital stay of about 10 days and several months off work to recover.
