Aid for Baby Amilya O’Connell
Donation protected
On Tuesday, August 23rd my brother Ryan O’Connell and his wife Heidi gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Amilya. Soon after she was born she was diagnosed with EA/TEF which stands for Esophageal Atresia/Tracheo-Esophageal Fistula.
The treatment for EA/TEF is immediate surgery and a lengthy stay in the NICU.
Baby Amilya’s surgery was completed within 24 hours of her birth. She will be sedated for several days after surgery and will stay 4-8 weeks in the NICU.
The only thing Ryan and Heidi should have to focus on during these coming months is the health and safety of their new family. However, I think we all know that a long-term hospital stay can strain any family financially. To help ease that burden, I’m asking friends, family, and strangers alike to give what you can. Every little bit helps Ryan and Heidi keep their focus on what matters, getting Amilya home healthy and happy. Thank you for reading, giving, praying, etc. It is all needed and very much appreciated.
*more information on EA/TEF below*
What is EA/TEF?
In short, the esophagus and trachea arise from the same original tissue, forming into two side-by-side passageways, the esophagus leading from the throat to the stomach and digestive tract, and the trachea leading from the larynx to the lungs and respiratory system. Normally, the two tubes form separately (differentiate); however, in the case of ea/tef, they do not differentiate.
What is the treatment?
Infants with EA/TEF, are unlikely to survive without surgery to reconnect the esophagus. The procedure is done as soon as possible.
