After so many have asked or recommended, I am a little reluctant to do this. Never done this, but the situation is beyond overwhelming my family. Im Lauren, the only child of Priscilla (ret. Hospice nurse who immigrated from the Philippines in the 70’s) and Darrell S (ret. physician & Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam war) They bought our home in Altadena, in the 70’s. I came around in the 80’s. My daughter came in the 2000’s and also grew up there. That’s all we’ve ever known as home, the whole entire Altadena was home. The city is gone.

Miraculously our street is the only one from every side and all around that didn’t burn to the ground. However we’ve been told we can’t come back for a long period of time.

part 2..

After Lifting her lifeless, vegetative state body in bedsheet, detached from oxygen, into a car to evacuate at 5:30am Wednesday Jan 8, 911 had literally hung up on me when I described the need for transport for a bed bound vegetative patient. Fire dept was no where to be seen, ALL day actually. I straightened her as best I could in the passenger seat and my dad who has multiple health issues himself, drove her to the nearest hospital just to get her back on oxygen. I spent the entire day packing our home, wetting the exterior, by myself. In the evening, hospice was able to get her transferred about 40 min away.

My mom passed away 9am January 10th. She had suffered a severe hemorrhagic stroke on the brain stem Nov 26, 2023 and had been kept alive via trach, gtube, my dad & a beautiful home health aide. My daughter and I busy in school and with my son, did what we could to help when we could. She was the light and the only thing that kept the world spinning and knew how to get things done. She was everything to all of us, but she’s free now. Now that shes passed from her physical prison, we have to think of the after. I have to learn how to navigate all of this as an only child and do what I can to help my dad, my older daughter who lived with them who was just about to take her nclex but had to postpone due to all of this. I’m also a full time nursing student with no income and have my 9yr old son who goes to school in Altadena. I had planned to send him to the middle school that has now burned down. This feels like it’s going to be the longest wait and see, day by day, indefinitely-type of situation.

The donations will help with some things, too much to list. National guard hasn’t let us up to check on the house, looters are dying to get into the homes that still stand. So we’re on a strict curfew as well.

I always wanted a traditional Filipino embroidered bolero aka Terno to bury her in. I don’t know what else is supposed to be arranged in this department. Programs, food & snacks? Leave a note of suggestions with your donation. We all thank you, my mother thanks you too. All of us.

Thank you from my broken, shattered heart. I’m trying to stay as strong, still focus on school, keep my kids in good spirits, make sure my dad has enough, as best I can and do what my mom would do- take care of everyone all at once. It’s so hard..thank you for listening if you made it this far.
