Aid Stephen's Battle with Cancer and Chronic Pain
Donation protected
Hello everyone - we are the Sodemann family. My name is Carmen and my husband's name is Stephen. We have never been ones to ask for assistance so this is a difficult request to make. The past couple of years have been a lot for us and we are struggling to make ends meet and keep our family afloat. Stephen broke his back at the beginning of 2024 which put him out of work for several months. As he was being treated for his back injury, the doctors informed us that Stephen has a form of plasma cancer, also known as Multiple Myeloma. This condition is treatable, but there is no cure. He began weekly chemotherapy treatments on September 23rd and continued to work as long as he could, but appointments, chemo, and radiation takes up a lot of time as well as his energy dealing with chronic pain, good and bad days, etc. He has also been consulting/testing with doctors at Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit for a stem cell transplant in early 2025 which will result in an extended recovery time, numerous restrictions, as well as appointments to stay on top of his progress. There have been some complications throughout this process, as Stephen's bones are very fragile and has to be very cautious with his activities. Even a cough could result in a bone fracture. As of right now the L5, L4, L3, L2, T11, and T12 in his back are fractured. We are waiting for additional information from the doctors and can provide updates as we receive them.
Along with this diagnosis comes the stress of medical bills and the cost of living in general with limited short-term disability income. We have 4 children with one under the age of 18. The grown ones have their own families to support; they help as much as possible but can only do so much. Stephen is the sole provider, and I have been battling alcohol addiction for the past couple years. Recently, my addiction has caused a seizure/stroke and was hospitalized for a period of time. Currently, I am unable to work or drive. I am in a day to day battle with myself, trying to get better, but as some of you know it is definitely not easy with the stress of bills, dealing with Stephen's illness, etc. I am not proud of it and pray that I can find the strength to kick my addiction.
Any contribution to the family will be greatly appreciated during this trying time in our life. Thank you so much!
