Lahaina Wildfire Relief for Our Family

Many of you have heard about the West Maui Fires on August 8th leaving thousands of people homeless. With a heavy heart, I share that our family was one of the many that lost their home. I humbly ask for your support to help us rebuild what our family has lost.

Fortunately, I was off-island at the time with our daughter in Japan and my husband, Kawika was able to escape at a moment's notice with only the clothes on his back, leaving his car and all his possessions behind. The area where our apartment was is completely left in ruins with no hope for return any time soon.

Our four-year daughter has had to spend most of her life separated from her father due to covid travel restrictions and just as we finally come close to reuniting, this devastating fire has shelved our chances of being together again.

The community has already received overwhelming support with millions of dollars raised by large organizations that are helping with the immediate needs. However, individual families will struggle to get their lives back for years to come. Many of our friends live in Lahaina or are within the Hawaiian Islands and have already donated to these organizations or to friends and family of their own so I am looking for help outside our community and hope to reach some off-island and international supporters for any additional contributions.

If you have ever visited Maui or the Hawaiian Islands, this is your chance to give back to our community. Whether it's donating to a charity, a small contribution to our fundraiser or simply sharing this campaign or any news of the current situation with friends and family, every bit helps in spreading awareness and helping us rebuild our lives and home.

Without power and service for days, it was difficult to comprehend the severity of the situation but now we know it’s worse than we could have ever fathomed. The process to rebuild will take years but these funds raised will go to helping acquire temporary housing, essentials such as clothing and food, and whatever is necessary to survive for the next few months and beyond.

Most importantly, none of our immediate family members were physically harmed by the fire but our hearts go out to the many people in our community that still have family members missing or have already lost people dear to them.

8月8日にマウイ島西部で発生したハワイ史上最悪の山火事の被害により、私たち家族はラハイナの自宅が全焼し、車を含む全ての物を失いました。

幸いなことに、娘のリリアナ(4才)と私は災害時、日本に滞在しており、ラハイナにいた夫のカヴィカは着の身着のまま、友人の車で脱出することができました。しかし、私たちの車と所持品は火災で全焼。ラハイナの家は廃墟となり、現状、すぐに戻れる見込みはありません。しばらくの間は、娘を父親に会いに行かせることもできません。

私たちの娘は、新型コロナウイルスの渡航制限により、生まれてからほとんどの期間、父親と離れて過ごしてました。ようやく自由に行来出来るようになった矢先、この壊滅的な大火災により、再び一緒になれるチャンスを逃してしまってます。

個人的なドネイションになってしまい

大変恐縮ですが、今はみなさまのお力添えが必要です。集まった資金は家族の復縁、今後の住居、衣料品や食料などの必需品を購入するために使います。

また、今回の災害の影響で停電が発生し、インターネットが使えない中、状況の深刻さを理解するのは困難でしたが、少しずつ明確になった今、私たちが想像していた状況をはるかに超えてることがわかりました。世界中の人々から愛され続けてた美しい古都ラハイナの再建のプロセスには何年もかかります。マウイ・コミュニティへの募金、あるいは現在マウイ島で起きている状況を友人や家族と共有することで、認識が広まり、私たちの生活とマウイ・コミュニティの再建に役立つと信じています。

最後に、今なお家族が行方不明の方々には一日も早い再会を心からお祈りいたします。

また、すでに大切な人を亡くした方々に心よりお悔やみ申し上げます。
