Aimee Gerhardt is a 22 year old college student who is one month away from graduating with a degree in music management. She had planned to spend the next year touring with the artist she manages as well as doing photo/video for various artists. Her plans changed on April 9th when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, which is a very rare type of cancer. This type of Sarcoma affects the muscle tissue. Aimee was found to have a large tumor in her chest. There are about 250 cases of this type of cancer in the US per year and it accounts for about 1% of all adult cancers.
Because of the rarity of this cancer, a vague pathology report, and having evidence of two underlying subtypes, the prognosis is uncertain. It's very rare for Rhabdomyosarcoma to present itself as a mediastinal (chest) mass. Aimee will require at least one or more years of treatment. Chemo will be started to shrink the tumor and then possibly surgery in the future. The surgery would be very dangerous because of the location of the mass and the vital organs in which it is placed on.
Any donations will be used to help with medical expenses. Since this cancer is so rare, Aimee would also like to seek out alternative/complementary treatment options. Please keep Aimee and her family in your thoughts and prayers as they move forward in this battle.
Her dad Keith Gerhardt and I would like to thank each and everyone for the continued support.
