Akashi & Kendall’s Gender Affirmation Surgery Fund
Donation protected
Hello to supporters of trans women and new chapters!
Our names are Akashi and Kendall.
We are looking for your love and coin to take us into a fresh and more certain future.
Both originally from New Zealand, we moved to Sydney to start a new life. Here we connected and started our special journey together. As sisters, friends and ‘House of Silky’ girls we met through the vogue ballroom scene — a movement
pioneered by Black trans women in NYC who made it safer for LGBTQIA communities like ours worldwide. We are surrounded by like-minded folks that support us, but in truth our daily lives are harsh and complicated.
As Non-Australian trans women of colour living here, it’s been hard to find work. Employers have turned us down just for being trans. Some of us are regularly turning to sex work in order to survive. With no real support or assistance from the government, we only have ourselves to rely on.
There are days when trying to save money for our current survival AND gender reaffirming surgery have felt impossible. With each stride forward, we are often knocked back threefold. We both come from backgrounds where there is shame around asking for money, so for years we’ve shied away from crowdfunding for fear of being let down or judged. As two fiercely independent trans women, we don’t know what it's like to ask for help outside of chosen family.
But there comes a time when one simply must trust the collective and quieten their ego/fears. If we want to truly find happiness, be safe, fulfill and fight for the life we deserve…. then we must reach out. Holding surgeries and safety in our imagination until now, watching them actualise in real time would change everything.
Mentally, body dysmorphia for trans women is painful. It means living as your full and authentic self can only be felt in fleeting moments, a ‘needle in haystack’ reality. While we smile and continue forward, there is a lot of hurt and pain under all the resilience. We now put out the call.
Your contribution will go towards our gender affirming surgeries, that will be split evenly between the two of us. We know that it is hard for us to meet our goal doing this alone — but we have each other to lean on! Motivating one another to take this step is the first part, your donation is the second. We are reaching out to allies, friends and people who believe ‘Trans Lives Matter’, please show up and show out. We need your help, not lip service. We will be grateful for any support received.
All our love,
Akashi and Kendall
