Alaska's Healing Hearts-Veterans Helping Veterans

While watching an episode of the TV show called Fixers on BYU TV, my heart was touched as I watched a group of loving folks who have created a national organization, Alaska’s Healing Hearts, offering year-round outdoor recreational opportunities for America’s brave wounded warriors and their families. Rehabilitation activities include fishing, skiing, rodeo, dog, and various other outdoor pursuits. They work to provide new and challenging options and experiences in an effort to contribute to social reintegration necessary for our nation’s heroes. While watching the Pavilion with the fire pit being built I thought how wonderful it would be if I could make quilts for these Warriors to wrap themselves up in while they sit around the fire and discuss how they can reintegrate safely into their communities and homes.
My local Quilt Guild, Bandon, Oregon Quilt Guild and I would like to make quilts and send them up to these Warriors and their families!! Most of the work in putting the quilts together will be voluntary with love going into every stitch we sew!! But there are some major costs that we cannot provide as a group of women who have been gifted fabric and pay it forward in quilts of love.
So, we are asking caring folks to help us. The major costs that this Fund will pay for are shipping costs to Alaska, backing fabric and batting for the quilts. Guild members will share our “stash” of gifted fabric for the tops and our gentle hands to make the tops. We are hoping to make and send 4-6 quilts each month.
We have already started making tops and the support that you are able to contribute will mean so much to the Veterans and their families that are able to participate in Alaska’s Healing Hearts programs.
As a BIG thank you for your support for our Veterans, we want to give away the gorgeous quilt in the opening picture. One wonderful donor will receive this quilt and see just what our Veterans have to look forward to!!
