My twin brother, Mike Mahnke, and his wife Tanya were so excited to introduce the world to their ‘soon – to – arrive’ healthy, active baby girl, Alaya Lin Mahnke.

Tanya’s pregnancy was perfect. The baby growing inside her was feeling the excitement too, with the kicks and rolls Tanya was feeling. This is something the couple, along with their families, had been waiting for a long time.  The nursery was ready, the car seat safely bolted into their newly acquired child-friendly SUV, and their hearts ready to receive and hold their baby girl, their whole world.
Tanya’s labour began on Thursday, June 18th at their home. On Friday, June 19th, when contractions became stronger and more regular, they decided to head to the hospital. However, they were sent home as the medical team said she was not ready.   They returned once again that evening hoping it was time.

After many hours in pain, her progression stalled. Tanya knew something was wrong and begged for a C-section. The heartbeat was also low for many hours. Early Saturday morning medical professionals realized they could not find the baby’s heartbeat at all and an emergency C-section was performed. Alaya Lin Mahnke, a beautiful 8lbs-4oz baby girl was born on June 20, 2020. Sadly, Alaya had to be immediately resuscitated.  She was then admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with little brain activity and many other medical complications.
Tanya and Mike, along with the medical care team, had to make the unimaginable decision to withdraw medical intervention after 27 hours on life support, due to Alaya's condition worsening. They were able to hold their little baby girl and so did each family member who were present. Between 10:00 and 10:15am, June 21st on Father’s Day, while in the arms of Tanya and Mike, Alaya took her last breath.

Everyone is devastated and heartbroken and trying to cope with this tremendous loss. If a C-section were performed as Tanya had requested, this perfectly healthy baby girl that she carried these last 9 months with excitement, would have been with them today.

In addition to this horrible tragedy, Mike and Tanya must now face financial difficulties as a result of their maternity / paternity leave status changing. They will need to stay off work to receive counselling and to heal.

A Service/Celebration of Life will be held on August 8th.  An announcement of time and place for the ceremony will follow at a later date.  As a result of many friends and family asking how to help Tanya and Mike, a ‘Go Fund Me Page’ has been set up.
