A typical 12 year old boy who loves video and board games, playing soccer, reading and playing chess was recently diagnosed with Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis. Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis is an autoimmune disease where one's immune system attacks the NMDA receptors (electrical impulses in the brain).
Anti = Autoimmune Response
NMDAR = Proteins that control the electrical impulses in the brain that are critical for judgement, perception, human interaction, formation and retrieval of memory and the control of unconscious activities (breathing, swallowing, etc.)
Encephalitis = Causing swelling and disruption in brain signaling
Main symptoms of Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis include flu-like symptoms, memory loss, sleep and speech disorders, loss of consciousness and seizures. Some who have complained of flu-like symptoms identify that as the beginning of their disease. The majority of cases occur in young adults and children where females are four times more likely to be affected than males.
Treatment of Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis includes hospitalization, corticosteroids (“steroids”), intravenous immunoglobulin (antibodies collected from healthy blood donors that bind host antibodies) and plasmapheresis (use of a machine to filter antibodies out of the host’s blood).
Recovery from Anti-NMDAR Encephalitis is often slow and may occur over months to years. It is not contagious and there is not any evidence to suggest that it is hereditary. It’s ‘one of those things’.
Alejandro is receiving great treatment and care thanks to the staff at Children's Hospital in Katy, Texas. His prognosis is evolving and his medical testing continues including multiple MRI’s, blood and spinal fluids.
Alejandro attends West Briar Middle School in Houston, Texas. He is an avid reader and recently participated in the Harris County Independent School District’s “Name that Book” competition in which his team won third place! Alejandro enjoys Dragon Ball, playing chess, trading cards with his friends and spending time with his family, Dad “Roberto”, Mom “Vanessa“ and little sister “Arianna”.
One hundred percent of funds raised for Alejandro’s will be used towards his medical expenses.
