Alessandra's World Challenge Trip - Borneo 2024

Hi, my name is Alessandra. I’m a year 11 student at Shenton College and I'm excited to be travelling to Borneo with World Challenge in January 2024.

The trip to Borneo is all about helping with wildlife conservation and gaining a greater understanding of how we can all play a part in working towards a more sustainable future.

I’ve always been passionate about conservation and playing my part to ensure that the future of our planet is safe for us and the generations to come. I’ve volunteered at a number of events run by the Conservation Council of WA and participated in several tree-planting festivals with Activate Tree Planting. In the last two years, we have planted over 150,000 trees in the WA Wheatbelt.

World Challenge has been inspiring leadership through student-led expeditions for the past 30 years, enabling transformative travel experiences for young people right around the world. It’s the kind of learning that we as students will carry with us long into the future, learning that can only come from experiencing this amazing planet and the unique cultures that inhabit it.

This expedition will see us tackling the Pahu Trail trek and meeting orangutangs at the Sepilok Orangutang Rehabilitation Centre. Along the way we will be working with experts and contributing to wildlife and marine conservation – specifically turtle ecology and conservation and joining night patrols to ensure nearby beaches are safe for nesting turtles.

We will be living alongside rural communities immersing ourselves in different cultures and experiences to gain a greater understanding of our role within our global community.

We will also be contributing to an initiative that aims to reverse biodiversity loss and promote the sustainable management of vital ecosystems.
