On Wednesday, April 27th, Kyndall and Alex began this nightmare of a journey that no parent should ever have to experience. Their son River, who was just shy of being two weeks old, was not acting himself. After trying a few things to stimulate him, they trusted their gut and rushed him to Cleveland Clinic - Indian River where they determined he would need to be transferred to Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando immediately. Thursday, May 28th was spent performing CT Scans, X-rays, an MRI, Spinal tap and several other tests. Finally, River was diagnosed with sepsis due to Viral Meningitis. While having a diagnoses answered all the questions, this was just the beginning of a long journey ahead.
River has experienced seizures and shows several areas of the brain that indicate mini strokes have occurred. During his first day at Nemours River went into acute respiratory failure which lead to him being intubated and placed on a ventilator for respiratory support. Currently it is unknown if he will have lasting deficits from the infection and mini strokes.
River will be admitted for at least 3 weeks while receiving IV antibiotics. We are hopeful that he will be discharged after 3 weeks, but he will still need many months of treatment and doctors visits.
As you may know, Alex and Kyndall share 4 other children and are making several trips between Orlando and Sebastian to visit the kids and take care of necessities.
While River is receiving amazing care from Nemours, the family is about to be hit with several medical bills throughout their long journey ahead. Anything to help make this situation less stressful for his family is greatly and wholeheartedly appreciated.
