Some of you may have heard and some may have no idea but on the night of February 29th, my mom and step dad we’re settling in for the night at their home when they heard a knock on the back door. My step dad went and got his gun, that he has to protect himself and my mom. When he went back to open the door, there was no one there. My step dad laid his gun on the kitchen counter and sat back down in his chair next to my mom. 15 minutes later, they both heard something either hit or someone kick the back door. Both my step dad and mom stood up and as my step dad reached for his gun, someone shot through the kitchen window, striking my step dad in the hip. The bullet went through his body, fracturing his pelvis, missing all organ and arteries (Thank the Good Lord), exited his body, completely missing my mom and going through the living room wall. The Lexington Police Department responded immediately and were there in less than 5 minutes. The First Responders wasted no time getting my step dad to UK Hospital and everyone involved did a stellar job taking care of him. Luckily we have been able to avoid surgery but he is in the hospital as they attempt to keep his blood pressure, sugar levels and sodium levels stabilized. Once they do that, he will be transferred to a rehabilitation center for an unknown amount of time to recover. Most of you all don’t know a lot about my step dad but I’m going to brag on him for a minute. This man is a former Police Officer who then became a Nurse to care for his disabled daughter after he lost his wife/her mother to cancer. He is a severe diabetic, has a pace maker and has survived not one, not two but THREE battles with bladder cancer. Early Sunday morning in the ER, he said to me “I just have some pretty bad luck” and after I spouted off the things he’s survived I reminded him that he probably has better luck than all of us. He and my mom are good people, who go to church on Sunday, never bother anyone and never ask for anything. They help me with Eli every single time I ask and never tell him no when he calls and asks to come to their house. A house that they are now putting on the market because they don’t feel safe to go back there and I don’t feel safe letting my child go back there. I don’t ask for things and I try to help anyone who asks me for help but now I’m asking you. Not for myself, but for them. It’s going to be a long road of recovery and they are going to need some help with medical expenses. I know not all of you can help, believe me, I get it. But anything helps, even if that is you sharing this page or you saying a little prayer when you lay your head down at night. We are going to need all the prayers we can get. I love you all and I appreciate anything and everything you can do for them. I don’t know anyone who deserves help more. Thank you all if you’ve made it this far.
