Alex Sutherland's New Chapter of Life
Donation protected
On November 14th, 2019, Alex's only family member, his mother Lorna Sutherland, suddenly passed away from liver complications and illness.
Sadly, no will was left behind for Alex to support his basic needs.
The proceeds of this Go Fund Me page will go directly to Alex's rent, food, transportation, bills, and hopefully his ongoing participation and involvement in the community.
About Alex:
Alex is 36 years old and lives with Down's Syndrome. He has battled the obstacles throughout his life, yet never let his developmental disability stand in the way of achieving his goals. For example, Alex attended public schools all through kindergarten to high school, as well as attended the University of Alberta, taking a variety of classes from dance, to history. Alex also has maintained many part-time jobs over the years through the assistance of Inclusion Alberta, and currently works at the Winspear, which he has been a valued member of their team for 7 years. Alex also has danced with 2 organizations over the years, including Cripsie and Soldance.
Alex's ability to complete everyday activities and maintain his positions in his jobs is possible with the assistance of a paid Disability Support Worker.
This message was created by myself, a current Disability Support Staff for Alex Sutherland, who has had the pleasure of working with him for 3 and a half years.

Below is a message from a fellow dance member in the community on how Alex has impacted the lives of many and how this funding will contribute to helping support his ongoing needs and his involvement in the community.
"If you are a frequent visitor to the Alberta Art Gallery, the Winspear Centre, or if you are a live theatre lover, you must have seen Alex Sutherland ushering you to the holy space of art. If you are a modern dance admirer, you probably have enjoyed watching Alex on the stage, performing with his CRIPSiE collective, a group of performers "committed to fostering high quality, creative, anti-oppressive and inclusive art practices and performances".
If you are Alex's friend or acquaintance, you know that he could be a joyful outfit shopping buddy and honest fashion adviser. That he loves funny movies, musicals, and dance documentaries. That you can find him laughing and joking with friends at Tim Hortons.
You also know that Alex is living with Down Syndrome. And that since last month, he has been living without his only family member, his mom Lorna, who suddenly passed away.
Gathered around him in these sad moments, we, Alex's community, realized that friendly hugs and Timmie's coffees provide important but insufficient support. As a bunch of rookie fundraisers, we decided to pass a virtual hat through "Go Fund Me". Our hope is that through this action we will raise money for Alex to support his active, lively presence in the community and ease the transition to the next phase of his life. The life without his mom.
Please, donate!"
