Alexander Zaiser's Kidney Transplant

Donation protected
This GoFundMe was created at the request of our friends who wanted to be able to donate toward Alexander Zaiser's kidney transplant. Please visit his website to learn more.

UPDATE: Alexander's kidney transplant surgery was a success! Click here for more information. Funds raised going forward will help pay for travel expenses to and from the transplant center and other expenses not covered by insurance (including expensive medications). Thank you for your continued support.

In September 2022, Alexander became ill and was diagnosed with an ultra-rare acute autoimmune disease called Goodpasture Syndrome. He received amazing intensive medical care from a team of specialists at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, Oregon. We're beyond grateful he will recover from the disease. Unfortunately, the disease quickly led to kidney failure, and he is now working with a team at Legacy Hospital in Portland, Oregon, to obtain a kidney transplant.

Alexander is currently undergoing dialysis until he gets his kidney transplant. He has accumulated over $700,000 in medical bills, some of it covered under his parents' insurance, but much of it not. Alexander will face ongoing costs:
  • His transplant will be expensive. (The average cost of a kidney transplant in the U.S. is $442,500.) His parents' insurance will cover some costs until he turns 26 years old. But other costs, including travel expenses to and from Portland and Stanford, will need to be paid out-of-pocket.
  • Once Alexander gets a new kidney, he'll need to take immunosuppressive and other drugs for the rest of his life. Those drugs will not be fully covered by insurance.
Alexander had to cut back on his college class schedule due to medical requirements, but he's still taking courses and plans to graduate from Oregon State University with a Bachelor's degree in hospitality management.

Please only donate what you can afford. We are acutely aware of how fortunate we are in certain ways, and there are many needy people in this world. There are also other ways to support Alexander, including spreading the word about his website and signing up to be an organ donor. Please also consider giving blood. Alexander received emergency blood and plasma transfusions in the hospital. Strangers we will never meet selflessly helped save Alexander's life, and we are eternally grateful.
