Basic Training Graduation
Donation protected
THIS CAMPAIGN IS ABOUT ME RAISING MONEY THROUGH THE REDEMPTION OF 5 CENT REDEEMABLE CANS AND BOTTLES. It is also to prove that where there's a will, there's a way. If you choose to donate cash, that is your own personal desicion, but that is not what I am asking for. Any funds over and above what I need will be be donated to the homeless shelter that we stayed in.
Hi, my name is Felicia Kowal and this is my son Alexander. After growing up witnessing domestic violence, and being caught up in the middle of an almost 8 year custody battle, a lot of teens would end up turning to drugs, crime, and violence.
After finally being awarded sole custody of both my children in 2011, the battle continued as their father refused to pay child support. My son Alex, my daughter Alexis, and I eventually ended up living in a homeless shelter for the 1st 8 months of 2013. The shelter helped us get back up on our feet, and was instrumental in helping to get the courts to order their father to finally pay support. During the 8 months in the shelter, the 3 of us were at the end of our rope and they both wanted to drop out of high school. Thank God the Truancy Officer and the courts stepped in to save us. Amazingly, both Alex and Alexis finished high school. Alexis, against all odds, walked across the stage with her original graduating class. Alex finished school by passing court ordered GED classes, and received his GED certificate a year and a half ahead of his high school graduating class.
I am now very proud to say that my son Alex has taken all that negativity that he suffered through and turned it positive by joining the Army Reserves. He left for Basic Training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on March 16th, 2015.
The reason for this GoFundMe campaign is that I would love to be able to be there in person to see his graduation from Basic Training on May 28th, 2015.
In order to help make this happen, I am collecting 5 cent cans and bottles from my family, friends, and co-workers within a 20 mile radius of our apartment in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. If you are within this radius and would like to help by donating cans and bottles, please feel free to email me at: [email redacted] so that we may arrange a day and time for me to pick them up.
I have also been prompted by a number of my friends to create this GoFundMe campaign in order for others outside of the 20 mile radius to be able to offer their support in other ways.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, I will be posting updates and pictures throughout this campaign.
NOTE: The round trip tickets that I've looked up range between $526. dollars to over a thousand dollars. The $1200. goal I set on this campaign is just a number to aim for. I am going to find the cheapest possible tickets and hopefully be able to surprise Alexis with a ticket as well.
In the event that this campaign raises more than I need, the remainder of the money will be donated to the homeless shelter that we were in, Lucy's Hearth in Middletown, RI, in order to help with the 10 families who currently reside there.
Here is a picture we found of Alex on his platoons website. He was doing an obstacle course from what people who have been through it told me.
