Alf Todd's Ride for Parkinsons

In June of 1987 (along with my 10 ½ year old son) I rode my bicycle from Victoria to San Francisco. The ride took 12 days to complete the distance of 1600 km. In July of 1991 I did the ride again. This time with my two sons, the younger being only 10 years old, and being one of the youngest to ever do the trip.

In June of 2007 I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Several years passed as I got used to giving up bits of my life. That’s the nature of PD; it plucks away at you. It was on Father’s day of 2011 when my daughter surprised me with the news that we were going to do the “ride” again. This time it would be a fund raiser, and we would bring along a support team as well as 17 other riders. We called ourselves “The Parky’s Peddlers” and raised nearly $20,000.

In 2017 we pulled together a team of 18 riders, called ourselves “Shakin’ the Rock”, and rode

from Port Hardy to Victoria in 5 days, raising nearly $20,000. The following year (2018), I rode (solo) from

Victoria to Port Alberni (190 km) in 11 hours, raising nearly $6000. The following summer (2019) along with a friend did the same ride and raised just shy of ten thousand dollars. And, in August of 2020 with my daughter, a cousin and my grandson raised over ten thousand dollars.

After finishing that ride, I said that it would be the last time I would ride “the hump” due to the danger involved, but I’m not quitting. This year we will do a ride which will start and end at PWP. The ride will

be broken into two options: the first will be approximately 60 km, and the second will be about 150

km. The ride will take place on August 14th, starting at 6:30 AM and finish about 6:00 PM.
