Ali and Michael's ALS Battle

Hi, my name is Megan, and I am creating this GoFundMe for my little sister Ali and her partner, Michael.

This year Michael was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as ALS. ALS is a fatal motor neuron disease characterized by the progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain. It affects voluntary control of arms and legs, and leads to trouble breathing. There is currently no cure for this disease. In the few months since his diagnosis, Michael has faced his prognosis with positivity, humor and determination. But in a very short time, he has become wheelchair and mostly house bound. Ali has been a rock, deeply committed to loving Michael and their blended family fiercely and to staying on top of any opportunities to challenge fate and give Michael more time, all while finishing her undergraduate degree and working full time. Together, they are an absolute inspiration.

But, while the emotional and physical toll of ALS are devastating, the financial costs of this diagnosis are crushing. Currently, Michael can not leave the house unless a few grown-ups are there to lift him, and so he has been pretty much trapped at home for the last month or so. A wheelchair lift alone is nearly $6,000. So I am starting this campaign to try and raise enough money for this piece equipment -- and other needs along the way -- to be installed as soon as possible.
