How girls spend thier time truly shapes who they are.
Thank you Easterns Motors for helping Chess Girls DC complete our 2017 goal. We were able to deliver chess classes and chess tournaments to over 100 students Please help the Chess Girls DC program at Emery Recreation Center survive by donating to continue to provide free chess classes and low cost chess tournaments at Emery.
This Spring, Emery Center, located in Washington,DC recognized that there was an absence of cognitive development activities for girls at its center. Research revealed that after the age of 8 cognitive development programs if any, in the city drop off significantly for girls.
Chess Girls DC organization was invited to teach chess class to girls. We started using a small grant from the Advisory Neighborhood Commission. Chess Girls DC accepted the opportunity to start the program, knowing that Chess Girls DC would be competing with cheerleading during the same time slot.
Going forward in 2018 we are in need of donations to continue the work that we started.
Chess is an intellectual sport that every girl can learn and play. The spring semester was very successful.
Please donate to keep the programing going. Chess is a powerful tool to improve executive function skills such as, strategic thinking, focus, long term planning, perseverance and constantly exercising self-control.
With the intense level of destructive marketing which our inner city girls are faced with on a daily basis, whether it’s peers, news, magazines, internet, they are ill equipped to withstand being lured into inappropriate situations. The only way to effectively analyze the various angles is to train the brain to out think opponents. The learning and the practice of chess is a effective way to train our young girls to process the information that they will be presented with throughout life, defending her position in the board room or defending a thesis. Chess strategies can be aligned with every aspect of education from math to reading or STEM education to economics.
As you enter the room at Emery Recreation Center, you see a banner that proclaims “Great Leaders have the same attributes as Great Chess Players”.
The students receive age appropriate chess books and chess boards. The goal of the Chess Girls DC program is to introduce and begin to develop a solid foundation of chess knowledge, taught in a way that properly prepares the girls to apply it in a thoughtful fashion, such that the executive function skills learned become a way to
practice successful thinking.
Every week, girls eagerly enter the room ready to play. They begin their game.
You can see the concentration on their faces. strategies. The class lasts an hour and during the rest of the week, the girls practice their game online. From the laughter, chatter, and smiles, the girls enjoy playing chess. Chess Girls DC has heard from parents that “their girls are more effective thinkers in school and have more confidence in expressing their thoughts.” There are other benefits such as girls feeling smarter and more confident in co-ed chess clubs at school. Universities and colleges offer scholarships for high level chess players. Chess Girls DC aims to use chess specifically to enhance the development of executive function skills in
as many girls as possible. Please donate to Emery chess class. Adding Chess to a girl’s academic foundation in the early years increases the probability of positive outcomes in college.
The Chess Girls DC program believes that Chess is a game where women can intellectually challenge men’s thinking and that there should be no boundaries in what women can accomplish.
