A few words from the Streich Family

 

“All heart, all in”

 

Allan Streich was a remarkable role model and left a lasting impression on his students and colleagues. From 1985-2008 he worked as a physical education teacher and sports coach at Selkirk Secondary School.

 

Allan inspired the student-athletes he coached. He coached with passion and was devoted to his profession. He was all heart and had a great sense of humour. Known as Coach Streich, Streicher or Big Al, he treated everyone equally. Allan made it easy for students to not only try out for his teams, but also, just want "to give it an honest go" in regular gym classes. Creating a safe environment, he worked with students to develop and succeed in the goals they set. Allan felt that with a strong work ethic, any team or individual achievement was possible!

 

Coach Streich developed and ran programs at Selkirk that still exist today. These programs were designed for the sole purpose of encouraging you to be the best you could be. He did his job humbly; perhaps Allan never knew the lasting effect his lessons had on his students and athletes later in life.

 

The annual Allan Streich Memorial Scholarship requires the successful recipient to:

• Demonstrate passion and inspire leadership through coaching or other community opportunities;

• Exhibit solid commitment, work ethic, resilience, teamwork, compassion and selflessness;

• Plan to work in a field that revolves around giving back to or serving the community in some capacity.

• Participated in the physical education curriculum and or on sports teams.

 

Allan’s family feels these attributes align with who he was. As a teacher, he was a dedicated public servant that gave so much. He loved his job and in sharing his passion, he made a difference in the lives of his students and his community that will be felt for generations.
