Allison just turned 23 and has been fighting the sudden onset of a chronic illness since she was 15. We sought help from multiple Kaiser docs, scored a referral to Stanford, and she was treated by several anthroposophical and holistic doctors as well. To no avail.
Allison has what appears to be a rare condition and is said to be allergic to her own hormones. Swelling of her eyes, mouth, tongue and virtually anywhere on her body compromises her quality of life several times a month and lands her in the E.R. every few months. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue. Even with insurance from her fulltime job at a local nursery, her co-pay for a trip to the E.R. costs $400 minimum. The cost of all her allergy meds adds up as does all that lost time at work when her eyes and mouth are swollen.
She is a beautiful soul with a creative job and lots of perk and drive to succeed. How can we help her? Allison does all she can to eat, sleep well and take good care of herself. And yet this year she has seen more swelling, coupled with extreme fatigue, than ever. Her boss at work has encouraged her to seek new advise and I certainly agree.
As you know, the country we live in provides great medical care only for those with money. Right now Allison would like to see a immunologist/allergy specialist who is out of the Kaiser system and charges $500 - 1,000 for a visit and work-up. Her appointment is in May. Even if she goes with a pretty drastic procedure recommended by Kaiser, she will have to have multiple injections that cost $2,000 a piece along with a raft of drugs (including steroids) to help her. And her instinct is to find some sort of medical help that is more naturalistic and less hard on her body.
Any money raised will be put into an account that Allison will draw on for co-pays, medicines, holistic and allopathic treatments. None of our friends and family are rich, we know that. Any amount raised could help. And sharing this post with your social network could help too.
We hate that this is a world where folks with chronic and life threatening conditions have to spend large amounts of money to get basic medical help. We appreciate anything you can do. And if you know any specialists or great holistic practitioners - Allison is open to knowing about them too.
