Alms for Tradition: Show the Beauty

Tax deductible
Please again help our young adults share the beauty of the Traditional Latin Mass as we work to propose Jesus Christ to the culture that we live in and work for the New Evangelization in the Archdiocese of Detroit and throughout the state of Michigan.

Juventutem Michigan is a group of Catholic young adults (aged 18-35) who pursue holiness by attending the Traditional Latin Mass (“TLM”) and by tapping into other timeless traditions of the Faith. Organized as a Michigan non-profit corporation, Juventutem Michigan is recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the IRS. For most donors, donations to Juventutem Michigan can be deducted from income on annual tax returns. Our full self-description may be read on our website - but our Facebook page is more fun to check out.

On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI opened the door for the return of the Traditional Latin Mass to the ordinary life of the Catholic Church. Since 2012, Juventutem Michigan has been laboring to take up Pope Benedict's invitation and to introduce our fellow young adults to this beautiful way of worshipping God. On the last Friday of most months, we organize a Missa Cantata and a young adult social activity. On 27 of those occasions over these five years, our monthly Mass has been a parish's "first ever TLM" or "first TLM since 1970." On nine of the occasions, our Mass has been a priest or bishop's first (public) TLM.

The young adult leaders of Juventutem Michigan pay our own way in being involved – whether paying for our own gasoline to make the trip to the community around Clear Creek in Oklahoma to serve as Juventutem ambassadors or donating thousands of dollars a year to support the monthly Latin Mass for young adults. At the same time, there is more that our team can do, if supported by others.

In recent months, great opportunities to promote the Traditional Latin Mass and Catholic Culture within the dioceses of Michigan have been addressed to us or have come to our attention. Those that can be addressed by exercise of our energies and limited resources alone have been addressed, but other opportunities that require additional monetary assistance remain outstanding. Among these are opportunities:
- to provided Missals and other needed materials to seminarians who are actively studying the TLM;
- to support young adult sacred musicians who wish to expand their skill set among the Church's sacred repertoire;
- for Juventutem Michigan to be present as a witness for the Church's Tradition in various fora;
- to help support the continuing education of our alums and other seminarians;
- to permit Juventutem members to be involved in the planning processes for WYD Panama;
- etc.

We need your donations so that we can continue the work of introducing the Traditional Latin Mass to our peers and promoting it among the myriad parishes of our state.

Items we need:

(1) Missale Romanum (1962) – a transitional deacon for the Diocese of Lansing is presently completing the Extraordinary Form course at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. He has asked for our help in buying him a missal, so that he can say this Mass once he is ordain. Some faithful of the Diocese of Lansing have raised part of the cost, but we need to raise the last $140.00 – to get the project over the top. We’d also like to have one in hand, so that we’ll be ready when we discover another willing cleric. $255.95
$395.95

(2) Birettas – we have repeatedly received inquiries as to birettas from priests and seminarians that have assisted us. We understand that they cost $75.00 each and we would like to purchase ten to recognizes the past assistance of local clerics.
$750.00

(3) Funds for seminarian enrichment

Since at least the time of the rectorship of Allen Vigneron (1994-2003), our local major seminary has enjoyed a strong reputation for preparing priests who will carry out the New Evangelization - that is, the presenting of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to persons who think that they have grown up near the faith but have never internalized into their own lives.  Happily, the seminary now even offers an elective course (LS 8891) that prepares presbyteral candidates for celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass!

In order to promote and to further support all of the good things that are already going on, Juventutem would like to set aside a fund to support beneficial social activities for our seminarians - whether to offer ever seminarian free admission to every one of our monthly socials for young adults or to organize cultural activities (i.e. trips to Shakespeare productions at the Hillberry ) in their neighborhood.
$1,500.00

(4) Scholarships for the Sacred Music studies

Between tuition and (double occupancy) lodging, attendance at the CMAA's annual colloquium totals to something like $880.00 per person.

As we continue to build up Catholic culture and to supplement existing efforts to promote liturgical competency and even beauty across our state, we would like to offer two more $700 scholarships to local young adults who would attend the colloquium or another CMAA chant workshop and then commit their increased skills to assistance at some of our successive liturgies. Or smaller amounts for other kinds of sacred music programs.
$1,400.00

(5) Tuition for the St. Junipero Serra Spanish Institute

We have observed that each bishop in the State of Michigan is working to prepare some or all of his priests to minister to members of our local flock who hail from Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America.  Given these efforts, we believe that Juventutem could productively cooperate with our ordinaries as to the continuing formation of transitional deacons and younger priests by sponsoring their studies at the eight week St. Junipero Serra Spanish Institute  that the FSSP offers in Guadalajara each summer.

Celebrating the TLM every day for eight weeks in the company of FSSP priests would be great for any of our young priests.  If we can raise the funds to support one priest ($7,300) and one seminarian ($6,860), we are very hopeful that at least one of bishops would be open to collaborating in this way.
$14,160.00

(6) Access to Conferences / Galas

Among the venues that Juventutem has found valuable to promoting the Church’s Tradition are the various Conferences and Galas by which the Local Church conducts certain parts of Her life. At various times, we have attended as a vendor the Diocese of Lansing’s The Man Event ($125), the Michigan Catholic Young Adult Conference ($77.87), the Holy Trinity Apostolate’s Lenten Symposium ($185.00), etc. In the future, we would like to be present at the Lansing Women’s Conference ($100?), the Call to Holiness Conference ($140.00), the Invictus Christus Conference ($50?), and at the Archbishop’s Gala, which supports our alums in the local seminary ($2,500.00).
$3,177.87

(7) Funds for our Seminarians

Two of our alums are continuing their studies for the Priesthood of Jesus Christ for the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. For each of them, we would like to raise $1,000.00 toward the cost of this year’s tuition.
$2,000.00

(8) Chartes Pilgrimage and Populus Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage

Various other young adult groups committed to Tradition have asked us about organizing trips to the annual Chartres Pilgrimage and to this September's pilgrimage in Rome on the 10th anniversary of the entry-into-force of Summorum Pontificum.

We estimate that the costs to make important exploratory efforts in these areas would be $5,900.

(9) WYD Panama

We would like the price of airfare to send an American member of some Juventutem chapter to Rome for the International Meeting (“From Krakow to Panama − The Synod Journeying with Young People.”) that will be conducted 5 to 9 April 2017 in preparation for WYD Panama as well as the next Synod of Bishops.
$985.00

(10) Hire an Executive Director

If donor generosity should somehow (Philippians 4:13) far exceed the ~$30,200 of programs described in our first nine bullet points, the team at Juventutem Michigan wants to "go pro" - and be able to devote more time and attention to making the Traditional Latin Mass available throughout Michigan.

We estimate that $25,000 would be an appropriate stipend to carry forward such an experiment for the first six months.

If you'd like our address in order to send a check (to avoid processing fees), or if you have questions of any sort, please contact us: [email redacted]

By default, donations will be credited against our hoped-for projects in the order set forth above.  If you would like to specifically direct your donation to one of our identified projects, please send us an email with your wishes and your phone number within 10 minutes of submitting your donation.  Thanks!

Thank you for reading through this long description of some of our hopes and dreams for ways in which we aim to build upon the liberality afforded to the Traditional Latin Mass in most of the dioceses of Michigan. God bless you!
