Alone at Sea, United at Heart: Redefining Autism Awareness

Hey there, fellow adventurers!
I'm Johannes Li, I am a 20-years-old neurodivergent sailor. I'm currently on an epic solo-circumnavigation that's part adventure, part mission to shake up the way we think about autism.
My goal is to be the first person with autism to successfully solo circumnavigate the world.
Join me as I navigate the wild seas and share my unique perspective on neurodiversity with the world!
Some of the challenges I face daily include:
1. Sensory Overload: The constant motion and sensory stimuli of the open sea can be overwhelming for someone with autism, requiring unique coping strategies to navigate.
2. Social Isolation: Solo sailing means extended periods of solitude, challenging for someone who craves social connection but struggles with social cues.
3. Hyperfocus vs. Distraction: While hyperfocus aids in tasks like navigation, it can make it difficult to adapt to unexpected situations or switch focus when needed.
4. Routine Disruption: Navigating different time zones and weather conditions disrupts familiar routines, posing challenges for someone who relies on structure.
5. Communication Barriers: Language barriers, radio protocols, and misunderstandings with other sailors can complicate communication, requiring alternative strategies.
6. Executive Functioning: Planning and decision-making demand meticulous organization and attention to detail, areas where individuals with autism may struggle.
7. Safety Concerns: Managing risks and staying calm under pressure is essential for solo sailing but can be challenging without proper support and preparation.
8. Emotional Resilience: Coping with loneliness, homesickness, and uncertainty at sea requires emotional resilience, an area where individuals with autism may need extra support.
As I sail around the globe, I'm not just chasing waves – I'm on a quest to rewrite the rulebook on autism awareness. From my quirky insights to the depths of my autistic mind, I'm here to show that being different is actually pretty darn awesome!
My solo circumnavigation started in Netherlands in May 2022, and to date I have sailed 5,382 miles! Once complete, I will have sailed over 25,000 miles around the world!
Unfortunately, I have found that the costs of undertaking such an adventure are far higher than I anticipated, and I need support to complete my mission!
Do you want to hop aboard and be part of this wild ride? Your support will help me keep the boat seaworthy, in addition to helping with other costs such as satellite communications, custom and immigration fees, awareness campaigns, and collaborations with local groups.
Let's make some waves and show the world that neurodiversity is something to celebrate!
My Motto, "Alone at Sea, United at Heart"; encapsulates the essence of my journey- A testament to the unity and strength found in diversity.
As I sail the high seas, my core value is “because everybody matters”
