Alora needs our help!

Our dear friend and colleague, Alora Springer (McGuire), needs our help, prayers and support. She has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a rare condition in which the bone marrow does not make enough healthy stem cells, the cells that produce red and white blood cells and platelets. As a result, people with MDS don’t have enough healthy blood cells and have low blood cell counts. The abnormal stem cells also can develop into blood cancers like leukemia.

MDS is rare and most often found in people over 65 years of age. At age 31, Alora is an extremely rare case. Her compromised immune system and very sick condition have necessitated her taking a medical leave from her job at Templeton Elementary School. The last few months have been full of medical appointments, including a trip to L.A. to see a specialist in MDS, and a blood transfusion.

Alora will soon begin a three-part treatment process, which begins with an oral medication regimen, followed by a series of injections each month. These treatments will make Alora nauseous and very ill, requiring hospitalization. When these treatments have put her condition into remission, a bone marrow transplant will allow her to be cured.

Alora has an arduous health journey ahead of her. Medical bills are already adding up and she is just beginning the lengthy treatment process. Alora is a loving, kind and generous spirit who has given so much to our community in her work with children. Let’s pull together to support sweet Alora and her nine-year-old son, Treston, in this time of need!
