Alpena Civil War Monument
Donation protected
The Alpena Chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans is raising funds to place a monument on the lawn of the Alpena County Courthouse to honor the 170 Civil War veterans buried in Alpena County. One of these veterans, George Maltz, fought with the 4th Michigan in the bloody wheatfield at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. The 4th Michigan began the day with 403 men and lost 165 men in the Wheatfield. This included Colonel Harrison H. Jeffords, who became the highest-ranked officer to be bayoneted as he attempted to save the Regiment's flag. The goal is to have the funds raised by Memorial Day, 2023.
