Hey Fam,

When the fire broke out, I had only minutes to evacuate. I managed to grab my cat, Zen (my most precious belonging), a few important papers, a picture of elephants my mom sent me, and… believe it or not, some old headshots, lol. We sat in the car, trying to hold out as long as we could, but the fire got too close. The winds and heat were just too powerful, and it was headed rapidly toward us.

It’s shocking how quickly everything can be taken away in a natural disaster. I’ve always sent prayers and good vibes to others in similar situations, but I never thought I’d be the one needing help.

My life has been turned upside down. I fell in love with Altadena the moment I saw it, and in 2004, I was fortunate enough to buy my home, a decision that changed my life for the better. The people in this community have made me a better person, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve spent here. My heart is heavy, not just for myself but for everyone affected by this fire.

I’m now on the phone with the insurance company, and we’re staying in a hotel. I’ve learned that when a fire destroys your home, insurance rarely covers everything. I told a dear friend that I didn’t want to start a GoFundMe campaign because I didn’t see myself as a charity case. In her sweet, understanding voice, she said, “But you are a charity case. And that’s okay. Needing help doesn’t define who you are—it just means you’re human.” I couldn’t help but laugh out loud, but her words hit hard, lol.

I never imagined I’d be in a position where I’d have to ask for support, but here I am. So, I’m humbly asking for your support. Your contribution will help us through these challenging times.
