On July 1, Amadou Diallo, a Guinean immigrant on a refugee visa, was fired by UPS after his truck was taken at gunpoint near Newark, New Jersey. After he was fired, Diallo was withheld a week’s worth of pay and is currently struggling to pay his bills as he deals with the psychological aftermath of the assault.
Diallo strongly believes that he was fired and denied payment because of his immigrant status.
The incident
On June 30, Diallo was delivering a package near Newark when a man jumped into his company’s van and drove off. Diallo ran after the truck when another man pulled up and held Diallo at gunpoint until the UPS truck was out of sight. The next day, Diallo’s manager at UPS blamed him for losing the van and fired him. Before he worked at UPS, Diallo was an Uber and Lyft driver.
All donations will go towards helping Diallo pay for his rent and basic necessities until he finds another job.
