Amanda (Mandy) Carter Liver Transplant Expenses

My sister Amanda (Mandy) Carter has been admitted to the ICU at Tampa General Hospital’s Transplant Institute. At 36 years old, she is in end-stage liver failure that has progressed to her needing a liver transplant to continue living. Prior to a decline in health, Mandy was a middle school Math teacher in Bradenton, Florida, and is a mother to two amazing teenagers.   Mandy is currently undergoing evaluation for the UNOS list. As of 6.27.23, the board has confirmed her caregiver list and the board of surgeons were meeting for approval. There are thousands of people on the waiting list to receive a liver transplant and many do not survive the wait. You can learn more here: organdonor.gov & UNOS. After Mandy’s liver transplant, her length of stay is unknown; she will then need a 24/7 caregiver for (a few) weeks, and she will then need to pick up the pieces of her life over the last year and begin her stages of true healing.  This GoFundMe has been created to assist Mandy with the following financial aspects of transplant expenses and ease her worries: • Any additional costs related to transplant that insurance does not cover (patients can be denied transplant if they are unable to afford financial maintenance after transplant). • Transportation as she undergoes several follow up visits from liver transplant multiple times per week. • Lodging near transplant center if necessary. • Costs of living during recovery period.   Outside of monetary costs, Mandy could use the following: • positive, genuine support. • time, to sit with her and her children when she needs or requests it. • respect for boundaries. • cards, pictures, and words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.
