My Friend; Domestic Abuse Survivor

Donation protected

We have all read about and probably know someone who has been a victim of domestic abuse.

It's so easy to think, "Why didn't she just leave?" and blame the victim, but it's usually so much more complicated.

After 15 years of brutal abuse, my dear friend took the steps to get out.  In March 2015 she and her 12-year old daughter moved into their own apartment.  She has since been trying to make a life for herself outside her abusive husband's grasp.

Unfortunately, he isn't willing to just let her go.  He follows her to work.  He steals her daughter's apartment key and lets himself into her home at all hours of the day and night.  Even though she has had the locks changed repeatedly, he still finds a way in.  He searches her house for evidence of another man (there isn't one), and basically terrorizes her just to keep her "in line".

She has  called the police numerous times to have him removed from the apartment, but he usually runs away right before the police arrive.  There never seem to be any repercussions for his behavior.  The skill he has for evading punishment is positively uncanny.

This past Friday my friend took a beating that made her realize that the next time she might not make it out alive.  She has pressed charges and is determined that this will not happen again.  Her husband came to her work today to harass her, and she had him arrested on the spot, while she hid in the office, shaking, crying and scared.

She is numb, heartbroken, emotionally and physically exhausted, wounded, scared, and mad. She is ready to fight for a happier, safer future for her and her child.

Knowing my friend, a few years down the line, she will be the poster child for domestic abuse survivors and will be out there convincing other victims they can become survivors.

She needs money to pay for her divorce attorney. That's what this fund is for. In North Carolina, you must be separated for a full year to file for divorce, and her year is coming up!  We are working hard to get her attorney paid for so that she can file for divorce immediately and move away from the area.  Her daughter deserves a safe place to live, and needs for her father to move on with his life.  We are hopeful that if my friend is no longer his legal "property", that he will let her go.

I know my facebook friends list is pretty amazing. Please help if you can. Many of you know my friend, so please respect her need for privacy right now. She is taking it one hour at a time, and we will lift her up and rebuild her so she comes back better than ever.

I promise you she is worthy of your help. She brings so much love and light to this world, we need to help her shine bright again.
