Meet the Schminke’s!

Dion & Kristin were thrilled to finally welcome their first child, Grayson, in February of 2016. He’s been their whole world since that first ultrasound picture and they are cherishing every moment and milestone together. This past fall, they began to notice some concerning symptoms such as difficulties with balance and eye changes that led them to a specialist at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. After weeks of agonizing tests and doctor’s appointments, they were given the devastating news. Grayson was diagnosed with a genetic neurometabolic disorder that impacts the brain and nervous system, known as late infantile metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). The disease is fatal. Their whole world has come to a stop and life as they know it is changed forever.

MLD has no cure. The progression of MLD is rapid and painful. The medical team expects Grayson to deteriorate every day and be in Stage 4 by the end of this summer. Once in stage 4, he will be wheelchair bound, dependent on a feeding tube for nutrition and nonverbal. All they can do is manage the symptoms while giving him all their love and making memories as best they can.

Medical expenses due to multiple appointments, medical equipment, and therapies are coming in. Numerous handicap accessible modifications are needed for the home and vehicles. The Schminke Family may have to succumb to one income once Grayson is fully in stage 4.The future is full of financial burden and unknowns. Please help us lessen this burden as much as we can for this amazing family. We want them to experience as many memories as possible while Grayson is still mobile and able to enjoy them. Time is of the essence and any donations will be greatly appreciated as every day is irreplaceable.
