My name is Amél Simms, I am an 18-year-old Judoka and currently a member of the GB Senior Judo Squad. I started judo at the age of 12, attending classes at my local club. I instantly fell in love with the sport and began competing locally within my first six months. I enjoyed many successes during my pre-cadet and cadet years at lower level competitions but found the transition into the national level competitions challenging.
I decided at this stage to commit myself fully to becoming a competitive Judoka, aspiring to represent my country on the international stage. I changed my nutrition, training regime, and attended different clubs and training camps throughout the country. In 2019 during my first Junior year, I was given an opportunity to attend training camps at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall which coincided with a consistent improvement in my Judo progression. I have been a medallist in The Welsh Open 2019 (Junior & Senior), Scottish Open (Senior) 2020 and the British National Championships (Senior) 2019, which resulted in me achieving my place on the GB National Senior Team.
International training camps and competitions will be fundamental to the next stage of my development. In support of my endeavour to secure these opportunities I am currently seeking financial assistance. I believe this could help me reach both my short-term goals of European Cup medals as well as my long-term goal of competing in an Olympics. Any funding secured will be used to cover the costs of my travel, accommodation, training camps and competitions.
Judo has helped build my confidence and self-belief and I hope to be able to use this platform to inspire other young people.
