American Foundation for Suicide Prevention X SDT

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education, and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies: funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide.

It's the third year that the sisters of Sigma Delta Tau will come together to raise awareness for the prevention of suicide. As a sorority, we are dedicated to helping those affected by suicide and to help support the community of research and awareness of AFSP.

This foundation is near and dear to our hearts as we started the event to honor our friend Charles “Himmy” Himmelrich. Charles was a senior at the University of Miami who had a heart of gold and a contagious smile. The sisters of Sigma Delta Tau are coming together to raise awareness about suicide prevention and to honor the legacy Charles has left behind. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following strategies: funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide. AFSP hosts a walk “Out of the Darkness” each year to support those who have lost a loved one and honor their memories.

Our goal this year is to raise $25,000 in order to support the research and funding for AFSP.
