INDO-AMIC CharityWalk John 'O Groats to Land's End

DREAM AND BELIEVE PROJECT - A Charity Walk Campaign from John O' Groats (North) to Lands End (South) virtually performed by The Indonesian Muslim Community in Aberdeen.

The Aberdeen Mosque and Islamic Centre (AMIC) is the first founded Mosque in Aberdeen, Scotland established in the late 1970s.

AMIC provides a range of services to the wider community – both Muslims and non-Muslims. These range from Islamic advice, Islamic Marriage, new Muslims education and service, counselling and family matters, Islamic Funerals, Islamic Education for kids and adults, interfaith dialogue, and more.

AMIC is currently led by Sheikh Ibrahim Alwawi PhD. He is a dedicated Imam to serve the Aberdeen community.

The Indonesian Muslim Community in Aberdeen (IMCA) recognises AMIC very well. Our community consists of students, British and Indonesian couples, and professional workers. One of our members is selected as a prayer leader (Imam) in AMIC. We are very fortunate to have AMIC as a central of Islamic activities in Aberdeen. Our children are studying Islam in AMIC. Our student members are having a place to receive free meals during one month of Ramadan.

AMIC has proven times and times again providing immense help and hands-on support, especially during the current difficult times. Last year, one of our community members had passed away. With help from Shaikh Ibrahim and his team in AMIC, they helped us to perform the funeral process by keeping adhering to the Government rules.

The current location of AMIC is situated in Spital Street, 5 minutes from the University of Aberdeen. There are other 2 mosques in Aberdeen that are also established to align with the growing Muslim’s population in Aberdeen. However, these 3 mosques are still experiencing insufficient space when it comes to congregation prayer every Friday and during Eid Prayer which is held two times a year.

At the moment, AMIC aims to have a new location with ample spaces and facilities which would be able to become a masjid and a community centre and would provide excellent facilities and services to the local community. The demand for services and the needs of space for congregation and prayers have evolved over the years and AMIC is facing many challenges operating from the current building whilst trying to support the Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

Here are just a few examples of the current issues:

1.       AMIC does not have a large hall or room for prayers, and this means that prayers are held in small rooms within the various buildings. This does not provide a spiritual environment or atmosphere for the worshipers. Additionally, people often must wait to pray outside in the forecourt during the Friday congregation in an area that is not covered and not convenient during rain and wintertime.

2.       Current facilities for ladies accommodate around 50, whereas the demand is greater.

3.       AMIC’s programs for madrasah, reminders, and lectures, and iftar programs in Ramadhan all take place on the same carpeted area people pray on. This is not ideal as people are effectively operating out of limited space, which means that AMIC can only have one activity happening at any given time.

4.       The current premises lack appropriate disabled access and facilities. Also, it is unsuitable for the desired madrasah activities.

5.       AMIC cannot introduce more programs for children and adults due to lack of space.

6.       AMIC does not have suitable dedicated Janazah facilities (body washing).

7.       AMIC does not have office space for Imam or meetings.

8.       There is a lack of storage.

9.       There is no dedicated car parking facility nearby.

AMIC launches a campaign the ‘Dream and Believe Project’ to relocate the Spital mosque to the new premises at Frederick Street, Aberdeen. The price of the building is £950,000, with some additional funds being required for refurbishment. Alhamdulillah, AMIC has in the region of £400,000 earmarked and available for this project and now need to raise the sum of £350,000 by the end of September 2021 to proceed with Phase 1 consisting of the purchase (£600,000) and initial refurbishment (£150,000) of the property. The remainder of the purchase price (£350,000) is still to be paid and will need to be made in due course.

We initiate this Charity Walk to raise some funds to help AMIC to achieve its campaign. Some members of our community will virtually walk from Lands’ End in the South to John O' Groat in the North of the UK. This Charity Walk will be held for 10 weeks until we achieve and hopefully exceed our targeted fund and meet the target steps which is approximately 2,000,000 steps.
