Amie Nielsen, Johns Hopkins Medicine Class of '00

Donation protected
This is a fundraiser for our beloved classmate Amie Nielsen.

After graduating from JHU in 2000, Amie completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. After residency, she returned home to serve her community in Salt Lake City, Utah at St. Mark's Hospital and has stayed there for nearly 20 years.

Six months ago, she developed progressive symptoms of upper abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. Unfortunately, in November of 2022 she was diagnosed with stage 4 Ovarian Cancer with peritoneal and omental metastases along with pleural effusions and ascites. She is under the care of the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City.

Her first rounds of chemotherapy were not as effective as initially hoped and findings of a recent exploratory laparoscopy precluded surgical resection. A new chemotherapeutic regimen has recently been started in the hope that it will lead to at least a partial response and a debulking surgery in the near future.

Amie has not been able to work as an ER Physician since her diagnosis. She is a divorced single mother who is raising three children (14-year-old twins and a 12-year-old) entirely on her own. Additionally, she had been the primary caregiver of her elderly father for 8 years, prior to his passing in early 2022.

This fundraiser is to help Amie and her children with many financial challenges caused by her recent illness. All funds will be given directly to Amie and her family.

Amie wants to let everyone know how appreciative she is of the incredible education she received at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine along with the camaraderie of her classmates; and she also wants to express to all clinicians what a difficult diagnosis ovarian cancer can be to make in its early stages because of the nebulous symptoms and presentation.

Thank you in advance for anything that you are able to give.
Please feel free to share this with anyone whom you think might be able to provide support.
