The young man circled in the attached picture from 1986 is my old Guilford College roommate Carlos Mijares. He played lacrosse while attending Guilford and is now an award-winning Venezuelan-American author, journalist, poet, educator, translator, and marketer.
Carlos and his family in Caracas, Venezuela, have become caught up in one of the most serious humanitarian crises in recent history, as the country's economy has collapsed under failed government controls, and basic necessities such as food and medicine have become extraordinarily scarce.
Conditions have reached a critical stage, (as documented in this recent Wall St. Journal article link here) and as hard as it may be to believe, the Venezuelan government is not accepting help from organized aid agencies. However, it is possible to send packages directly to individuals thru certain courier services, as many Venezuelan expats and family members outside the country have begun to do (read more about that in this article from the Houston Chronicle here )
The situation has deteriorated to the point that Carlos has recently appealed for help (see link to Facebook post here) from friends in the U.S. to send basic food and medicine directly to him for his sister, father and mother, while he is attempting to make arrangements for a tourist visa for him and his sister to come back to the U.S. You can correspond directly with him at [email redacted] or through Facebook to verify this.
I have recently shipped a care package of food to Carlos and have identified what appears to be a reliable courier service to his home in Caracas. I could put your donations to good use to pay for more supplies and associated shipping costs, and can provide documentation of what your donations will buy. I am not affiliated with an aid agency nor do I have 501c3 status, just acting as an individual friend in the U.S. to help an old friend in need, and I am asking you, particularly our Guilford College Friends, to consider helping out in this extraordinary and dire circumstance.
