Amy Goldstein Memorial Education Fund

Hello Friends and Family and caring people around the world,

My dear friend Amy Goldstein died two days after her 48th birthday. She left behind many loving family and friends, including her husband, Eliott and teenage sons, Hayden & Evan.

In 2012 she was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. The cancer is usually discovered in people that are teens or younger. Amy was 38, possibly the only person in the U.S. with that diagnosis in 2012. Hayden was in 1st grade, and Evan was in preschool. Eliott essentially became a single parent overnight to 2 young sons. The cancer was so rare that most oncologists didn't know how to treat the disease, and pediatric oncologists had never seen this cancer in an adult. Amy eventually received treatment at NYU Hospital.
The talented team of doctors and nurses removed her cancer. Amy then moved to Sloan Kettering Hospital for chemotherapy & radiation. With much gratitude, she lived at the Ronald McDonald House while she received exhausting surgeries and treatments. Lou & Diane Holmgren spent countless hours visiting and caring for their youngest child. Eliott cared for the boys while maintaining contact with the medical staff.

The cancer was treated successfully, but complications led to Guillain-Barre syndrome.
A rare disorder in which Amy's immune system attacked her nerves. Weakness and tingling spread everywhere, eventually paralyzing various parts of her body. Amy needed a tracheotomy to ensure that she could breathe.

Amy couldn't care for herself, requiring complete care to accomplish even the most basic and personal tasks.

Over ten years, she battled cancer, disability and sadness. Requiring at least five residential placements, including hospice. The medical bills piled up. Leaving no means to save for the boys' future.

You can imagine that Amy missed out on many life events. Hayden has faint memories of his mom before cancer, and Evan only has pictures.
Amy even missed out on attending Hayden's Bar Mitzvah. An event that she knew the date and time of at least two years in advance. Amy lived away from her family during the fear and isolation of covid and almost missed attending Evan's Bar Mitzvah celebration.

Amy's life appeared to be stable, but she was later devastated by a diagnosis of colon cancer. Her mind and spirit remained strong, but her body was too weak. Amy spent her last days at the beautiful Joe Raso Hospice Home in New City, New York.

I have created this fundraiser to create a lasting legacy for Amy's family.

Hayden is a senior in high school; he wants to major in industrial design.
He loves to watch sports and is an avid gamer. Hayden also loves legos, especially Star Wars & Marvel.

Evan is a freshman in high school; he is taking advanced Math, Social Studies & Math.
He is an avid sports card collector obsessed with anything associated with baseball, basketball, football & soccer. He even buys and sells sports cards.

Thank you for reading. Please share this with everyone you know. Please say a prayer for the family & friends that are mourning Amy's departure from our lives.

Thank you;
Scott & Lindsy Gay
