About the organisers of this campaign:

. Rudi Timmermans, developer of serveral Ubuntu Touch apps and Ubuntu Touch lover.

. Steve Kueffer, Linux enthusiast and contributor to several free software projects.

As initiators of this project, we support the development and promotion of Ubuntu Touch in a completely independent way.

We're members of the Ubuntu Touch community who believe Anbox is important to Ubuntu Touch's acceptance by more users.
We are not representatives of the UBports Foundation, instead we believe that an independently managed and funded limited-term project is a better use of our resources and the Foundation's.

What is Ubuntu Touch ?

A Mobile Version of the Ubuntu Operating System

Ubuntu Touch is made and maintained by the UBports Community. A group of volunteers and passionate people across the world. With Ubuntu Touch we offer a truly unique mobile experience - an alternative to the current most popular operating systems on the market.

We believe that everyone is free to use, study, share and improve all software created by the foundation without restrictions. Whenever possible, everything is distributed under free and open source licenses endorsed by the Free Software Foundation, the Open Source Initiative.

Ubuntu Touch is a mobile version of the Ubuntu operating system for mobile devices.

However, unlike other 'flavors' of Ubuntu, it is more accurately an extract of parts of Ubuntu.

It is adapted to run naturally in a mobile, touch-screen environment but is also capable of functioning as a desktop computer while in "desktop mode". This aforementioned converging of environments from device to device is where the term "Convergence" originates.

Ubuntu Touch is more alive than ever thanks to the fascinating work of the UBports Foundation and its very active community.

What is Anbox project ?

However, we want to make this wonderful mobile operating system usable without any restrictions, allowing it to install any Android app.

Anbox is a free and open-source compatibility layer that aims to allow mobile applications and mobile games developed for Android (.apk) to run on Linux distributions.
The goal is to increment and improve this structure within Ubuntu Touch, and make it potentially usable by other GNU/Linux distributions for smartphones and tablets.

This project was born in 2018. It is partially functional at this time. However, its development requires some additional resources to be fully operational.

We need your help!

With your support, we will be able to hire an engineer to develop this functionality within a reasonable timeframe.

Be a part of this change. Participate in our fundraising campaign now.

Make Ubuntu Touch the greatest GNU/Linux mobile operating system of all time, and allow thousands of people to join a free and sustainable project.

The Anbox epics we would like to see working on:

- Upgrade android in container to 10th version (initially needs Halium patches to disable SELinux)

- Moving to a faster graphical pipeline (moving from Protobuf to GRAP chic).

- Integrate power management, suspend Android container when not needed / device goes to sleep

- Implement built-in keyboard, contacts, notification integration.

- Implement hw-things (GPS, camera, video playback should do this initially).

- Make Anbox manageable from system settings (install, deactivate, activate, uninstall) - for example, Libertine.

- Security problems of banking applications.

We are happy to see you joining us in this marvelous project!
