Andean Dogs Need Help

HELP FOR PERUVIAN DOGS
My name is Julio Cesar Qquelcca Ramos and I am a tour guide in Cusco, Peru. Travelers visit her from all over the world to view the beautiful landscapes, explore ancient Incan sites, like machu picchu, and experience the local culture. But because tourism has nearly stopped during the COVID 19 pandemic I have used this time to do work that I really love – taking care of the stray and abandoned dogs and cats at S.O.S. animal rescue QOSQO as a rescuer and volunteer support staff.
One of the first things people notice when they visit our city is the large number of stray and abandoned dogs in the streets. Sadly, many of these dogs live a hard life - they often suffer and die from the spread of diseases and malnourishment, being injured in fights, or hit by cars. Because Cusco has no proper animal control we must rely on donations to charities and shelters, like S.O.S, that provide food, medical care and housing.

S.O.S Animal Rescue QOSQO was founded 2 years ago by Analia Villamonte. It is a home for dogs with all kinds of stories – some were hit by cars or gave birth in the streets; others were abused or abandoned by their owners and nearly all were malnourished when they arrived. Once they are in the shelter the animals receive all the love, care, and food so they can recover their confidence. We also provide them with basic dog training with the aim that they could be adopted easily by a good family and have a chance at a happy future.

The COVID 19 pandemic has had a terrible effect our economy in Cusco – we live from the tourism and sadly since the last year, fewer than 15 percent of travelers are coming to my town. This situation has directly affected the incomes of Analia Villamonte who bear the main expenses of the shelter.

It costs about $3000 USD every 6 months for us to pay the rent for the shelter and to provide food, medical care and training for the 50 dogs who live here. We hope to raise this amount in the next 2 months so that we can provide the best quality of life to our furry friends.
