Starting the evening of New Year's day, Andrew was complaining of a stomach ache. Well we all get them and so we treated it as one would. In the early morning of Tuesday Jan 2, Andrew still had a stomach ache and we sat with him till around 6 am when he said he was a bit better and wanted to sleep..

Faster forward to 5 pm Tuesday night. Andrew's stomach was really hurting and we didn't like the way he looked and he hadn't eaten all day. He was transported to Mercy Fairfield via emergency services.

He was taken for a CT.

Quickly he was diagnosed with a perforated stomach (hole the size of a dime). In total he had gastric perforation, peritonitis, pneumonia and possible kidney damage. He was very sick. They assembled a team and within 3 hours he was taken to surgery. Where a fantastic surgeon removed part of his stomach.

Andrew struggled to start recovering after surgery and had many ups and downs. Doctors didn't know what would happen. There were many times where nothing seemed to be going right. He was septic, couldn't breathe without a vent, and was very weak.

Every single step: surgery, post-op, recovery, had very low odds. With his muscular dystrophy, the body does not recover the way yours or mine would. His lungs, being compromised already, were unable to filter enough Co2 out and get oxygen in.

Andrew is a fighter! We were looking at the possibility of him not being able to come home between his breathing problems and his infections. BUT NOT ANDREW! This man decided he was going to fight! He kept his head up at every pass. He was determined to never give up. And he didn't. All of the cards and letters from all his friends and family only made it easier.
