YOUR HELP IS NEEDED--IN ANY AMOUNT--PLEASE DONATE
Renys Jose Murillo Meneses, is a 40 year old stone mason from Masaya, Nicaragua. He is devoted husband, loving father of three, a pillar of his small community and a devoted deacon of his local church.
Just over a year ago, Renys broke both bones in his right leg (Tibia and Fibula) just above the ankle joint while doing volunteer masonry work at his church. A stone accidently fell from a wall breaking the leg. The local hospital did what they could to repair the injury, but the fractures didn't heal properly and went into what is medically called a non union . The bones just didn't grow together. The only option now offered in Nicaragua is amputation.
Fortunately for Renys, he has friends who won't accept losing his leg due to limited medical resources in Nicaragua as a solution. One of these friends, Bill Draper, was introduced to the couple and their need in January, 2014 while on a mission trip to Nicaragua. Dr. Chadwick Smith of Cornerstone Orthopedics, Ringgold, GA was contacted and has agreed to provide his services free of charge and Hutcheson Medical Center, Ft. Olgethorpe, GA has agreed to supply the staff, operating room, anesthesia, hospital room, etc. free of charge. Additionally, Dean Short of SurgiCor, LLC, the distributor of Stryker Orthopaedic products in Tennessee and Kentucky, has generously offered to donate all the necessary implants needed.
This is the part where the friends Renys doesn't know he has, yet, come into play. We need to get Renys and his wife to the United States and support them while they are here. A place to live has already been established at Bill's house in Chattanooga, TN but we are working to raise enough money to cover the following:
- Round Trip airfare for Renys and his wife, Fany Del Socarro Palacio Namendi from Managua, Nicaragua to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
- Funds for food, medicine, clothing (the climate here in the winter is very different from Nicaragua), transportation and general living expenses. The length of their anticipated stay in the USA is 4-6 months.
- An interpreter to work with them as they navigate some of the medical issues related to Renys' surgery and recovery.
A church in the Chattanooga, TN community has already been found for them to attend during their stay. Hopefully, they will be here within the next few weeks and Renys can begin the process to getting a leg he can stand on again. Any funds raised and not spent on this couple's travel and living expenses will be given to them to help reestablish their life in Masaya upon return.
