Angel’s Life After Breast Cancer Wish
Donation protected
Hello, Angel is a resilient 32-year-old Black woman from Washington, DC. In October 2021, at the age of 30, she faced the challenge of a lifetime when diagnosed with Stage 1, Invasive Ductal Carcinoma ( breast cancer). Despite breast cancer not running in her family and her first oncologist initially dismissing it, Angel's determination led her to request documentation in her chart and seek a second opinion. It wasn't until then that she underwent a mammogram and biopsy, revealing the true nature of her diagnosis.
Since that pivotal moment, Angel's journey has been marked by strength, perseverance, and the unwavering support of those around her. She had her chemo port placed before starting chemotherapy, an additional step in this challenging process. Angel underwent a lumpectomy and lymphadenectomy on January 12, 2022, followed by a courageous decision to start the IVF process in February, which she later opted out of. Her four rounds of chemotherapy (Docetaxel & Cyclophosphamide) unfolded from March 9 to May 10, 2022, while 20 rounds of radiation concluded on July 15, 2022. Even after these treatments, her monthly Zoladex injections and Zometa infusions every six months will continue for the next 4 years. These ongoing treatments serve as a reminder that healing is a constant journey.
Living with the side effects of chemotherapy has significantly impacted Angel's physical body, emphasizing that life goes on. Since her diagnosis, she has realized that she can't navigate this challenging moment alone. Healing is not a linear path, and she is ready to embrace and share support in every form it takes.
Throughout Angel's journey, her savings have supported her, allowing her to continue facing the challenges that come with cancer. Unfortunately, her journey has impacted her ability to work since October 2021, surviving on savings and her retired parents' income. Her savings before breast cancer were originally meant for an elaborate 30th birthday celebration, home repairs, and emergencies. Unfortunately, all of her savings have been redirected to cover "life after cancer" medical insurance, breast cancer appointments, medications, acupuncture, lymph drainage massages, physical therapy, transportation, groceries, etc.
Angel has raised over $50,000 on behalf of several breast cancer awareness and resources organizations. She was recognized as a top fundraiser for Susan G. Komen in 2022 and featured as their Survivor Storyteller in 2023. Angel has been featured in media interviews, documentaries, and podcasts to share her breast cancer journey and continues to volunteer in person and virtually with Breast Cancer organizations throughout Washington, DC.
In addition to her personal journey, Angel has become an advocate out of being a statistic for young Black women with breast cancer. Your support not only helps her but also contributes to raising awareness and making a difference in the lives of others facing similar challenges.
Prior to her diagnosis, Angel's professional mission was to preserve African American history & culture for future generations. Her personal and professional mission now is to encourage and advocate for Black women like her so they can be here to do the work. To make history, to enjoy the culture. How do we do the work, any work, if the people we consider the subject matter experts aren't here and healthy?
She is reaching out to her community for financial assistance to maintain her life after cancer and her home. As a proud DC homeowner since 2017, she is determined not to lose her house.
The funds raised will contribute to:
- paying her mortgage
- covering medical expenses
- bills
- repairing her home
- and supporting her life after cancer as she reintegrates into the professional world.
She appreciates your understanding and support during these challenging times. Together, you can ensure that Angel continues to pursue the dreams she's held onto throughout this journey. Thank you for being a part of her story and helping her become the woman she's always aspired to be. Your generosity is a beacon of hope, and she is grateful for every step taken together towards a brighter future.
During her breast cancer journey, Angel became a published author. She invites you to purchase her journal here: Angel's Gratitude Journal
