Angel’s Journey To A New Liver
Donation protected
On Mother’s Day 2023 my mom suffered a 17 minute long tonic clonic seizure while we were going to the pool. She was taken to the closest hospital and while there the doctors decided to place her in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks. She was given extremely high doses of ketamine, propofol, and presedex to keep her sedated. Every doctor we have spoken to has said there is absolutely no reason she should have been sedated this long. In addition to that, they gave her around the clock Tylenol for fevers that they believed were a result of neurostorming. These medications are extremely hard on the liver and her liver function should have been consistently checked with lab work, unfortunately it was not.the doctors did not believe my mom would survive and that is the best reason I can come up with as to why they were willing to damage her liver as bad as they did and not check her liver function. Due to this neglect my mom was left with liver failure. We were never told about any sort of liver issue; she went into the hospital with perfect liver function and left in liver failure. A few days before she was discharged to a rehab facility to learn to walk again, the doctors told us she had some drug induced liver damage, but they started her on acetylcysteine and assured us it would be fine. It was far from fine. My mom learned to walk again while in liver failure. My mom was discharged while in liver failure. Upon a follow up with a GI doctor she was started on numerous medications for her liver as well as having multiple liver biopsies which all showed definite drug induced liver injury. As the days and weeks went on my mom only got sicker until her GI doctor referred us to a hepatologist who told us my mom needed a liver transplant. She has done all of the pre transplant testing but unfortunately suffered many set backs. The most recent being a hospitalization for an antibiotic resistant UTI, hepatic encephalopathy and fractures in her back. During that hospitalization she was life flighted to Mayo Clinic Jacksonville which is her transplant hospital. They have done another evaluation and decided she was not physically fit for transplant at this time. They are working with her to get her strong enough to handle the surgery, but until she can passed these tests, the transplant is on hold. She is incredibly sick and we are 6 hours away. My dad has to go be with her ASAP as a caregiver is required to be present before, during, and after transplant. This means my dad will lose his job as he has not been with the company for at least 1 year and we will have to find housing accommodations in Jacksonville for my dad as well as for them to stay at after her discharge since it is required to live by the hospital for 3-4 months post transplant. This is a huge amount of money needed in addition to keeping up with their home and bills here. We are asking for any help with covering these expenses and giving my mom the best shot at transplant as well as safe, comfortable, and clean housing for her in Jacksonville post transplant. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and any help you are able to offer is greatly appreciated
