Animal saviour desperately needs your help

Will you join us in giving back to someone who has given so much to literally thousands of animals in need? We’re Colin and Justin – and we’d like to tell you a story…
For the last 24 years, a miracle has been occurring in the village of Haliburton, Ontario. Unwanted and abandoned animals (cats, dogs, chickens, rabbits and even donkeys) have been given a second chance thanks to local heroes Maureen Adams and Charles McAleaney.
In the couple’s loving hands, the animals have been cared for and rehomed as a ‘not for profit’ side line to The Great Haliburton Feed Co, a pet supply store. Selflessly, they’ve rehomed literally thousands of animals, without outside funding. Maureen and Charles always relied on their own - modest – resources, and the generosity of others who adopted the animals they save.
How do we know this? Because we’re fortunate enough to have two amazing rescue cats called Beamer and Brutus Small – both of whom came to us via The Great Haliburton Feed Co. Beamer as an abandoned ten month old cat, and Brutus Small as a nine week old kitten, thrown from a moving truck. Fortunately the latter, heinous act was spotted by a good Samaritan who rescued the little bundle of fur and took him to The Great Haliburton Feed Co. where we found him. Shaken. Terrified. But alive…
Finding our beautiful boys, we should tell you, changed our lives, and we’re forever grateful to have them with us…
The Great Haliburton Feed Co. has been in operation since 1995 and, being in rural Canada, faced challenges when it came to keeping its doors open. The last few years have been especially tumultuous – in 2014 a fire destroyed the former business address. In January 2018, in a new location, there was another near-closure… and in early 2019 Charles’ passed away, entirely unexpectedly during a routine operation.
Maureen, by now alone in life, struggled to maintain the business and, with a faltering economy, was recently forced to face retirement.
Sadly, however, Haliburton’s biggest animal champion was unable to find a buyer and, at the end of September, The Great Haliburton Feed Co. will close its doors for the final time. After twenty four years of hard work and care, it’s full stop. The end of an era. The closing of a chapter. Without any type of financial return for all the hard work.
As you can imagine, the community is deeply saddened by the way events have unfolded. Maureen is, as Charles was, held in high regard by everyone in the community. The mood in town is somber when the subject is raised. People can hardly believe that The Great Haliburton Feed Co. will literally cease to exist. It’s just so, so sad.
We’d like to say goodbye, and thank you, to Maureen, on behalf of all the pets and pet owners who’ve been brought together by her outstanding endeavours. As she faces a somewhat financially compromised retirement, we’d like to steer a golden send off to help lessen the blow. Whether someone whose life was bettered by adopting a pet from Maureen and her late husband Charles, a good samaritan willing and able to give back to someone who has given so much or simply an animal lover who wants to say ‘thank you’, please join us by making a donation to help bolster this deserving cause.
Thank you, Colin, Justin, Beamer and Brutus Small xx
