Anjie home for her dad's funeral .

This morning we woke to the sad news that Anjie's father had passed away. Living in Indonesia is wonderful, extraordinarily hospitable people, beauty all around. Anjie and I are blessed to serve amazing students and their families as educators. But times like this are hard. Anjie lost two aunts since August and now her father. We missed the other two funerals but this time she needs to go. We need your help. And are truly grateful for your prayers and support.
Below are my first thoughts as I shared this morning:
It is a beautiful day in Salatiga, Indonesia, as we celebrate the "home going" of Dr. Howard Kardatzke, Anjie Kardatzke Martin's father. We are naturally saddened by the loss of this great man of God, we shed tears of sadness for his wife Karon and son David who held him as he passed from this world to his eternal home.

Just moments after his passing Anjie was able to sit face to face with her eldest sister Karla (thanks to technology) and share comforting words with one another. Just a couple of weeks ago Anjie was with Karla in Howard and Karon's home in Indiana, as we shared one last Christmas together.

Anjie and I are so overwhelmingly grateful to Dr. Donald McGavran for his help and encouragement to take that unplanned trip to the US at Christmas. The closure and memories obtained at that time go way beyond any words I might share. The time was made extra special by Mountainview (Where Anjie and I serve) graduates Joyce, Ju Hoon, SooJung(Christy) , YeJin and, of course, Dominic. These special young people filled the home with joy and laughter, much to Howard's delight and amusement.

Howard's body has been ravaged by time, he survived multiple heart episodes, and with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's-like dementia eating away at his brilliant mind, it was clear at Christmas that our time with Howard was limited. So while this was sudden it is not shocking.

Howard was a lifelong learner and educator, a former college professor, coordinator of student teachers and spent a career of notable service to the State of West Virginia in their department of Education, as director of teacher certification. And was so proud of his daughter's (Anjie) commitment to her faith and to education. In addition, her commitment and service to Anderson University as a student, then on the IT staff and more recently as a consultant for Global admissions were a point of great pride for Howard, a man whose father (Carl) attended Anderson and began a legacy, first with his 8 siblings, then his children (Howard and his 3 sisters)and nieces and nephews that has produced a family total of over 100 AU alumni.

He leaves behind his wife of 15 years, the intrepid Karon Teeters Kardatzke and four fantastic kids, David, Karla, Kerrie, and Anjie. He was so proud of his grand kids, Morgan, Marena, Madison, Dominic, Jackson, and Maci., as well as a great grandson, Brady. He will be reunited in Heaven with his parents Carl and "Tip" Kardatzke, and his wife Catherine Starkey Kardatzke all who left us far too soon Earlier this year his sister Phyllis and sister-in-law Mary, left this mortal toil. His sisters Mary Lee Hale and Lois were just in Anderson and able to be united one last time.

Howard's passing was just this morning, so we do not have funeral details, nor have we given a lot of thought into how we will participate. We will be processing this day by day, perhaps hour by hour.

I anticipate Anjie will be traveling back to the US in the next couple days. We will wait to book until we have a few more details.

In advance I thank you for your prayers! As for what else you can do? I don't know:) We will need some help getting Anjie back to the US .
