Ann Marie Tringale Mottola Scholarship 2024

Donation protected
We set up a scholarship in 2021 in memory of our mother, Ann Marie, in order to keep her name alive for years to come. We plan to award at least one (hopefully more if funding allows) Medford High School student each year with $1,000 toward completing a degree in science/medicine. The scholarship recipient should be a student pursuing a career in life sciences and have a shared passion for health and advancing medicine. Applicants must be attending a 2- or 4-year college/university and majoring in a science or medical field. In 2021, we awarded our 1st annual Ann Marie Tringale Mottola Memorial Scholarship at Medford High School's award night. In 2022 and 2023, we were able to award 2 $1,000 scholarships at the MHS award night!

Background

Ann Marie was a graduate of Girl’s Catholic High School in Malden. At that time, while friends and family were getting married and starting families, Ann Marie was passionate about advancing her education. She attended Northeastern University where she earned a bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science. She started her career at the Deaconess Hospital as a laboratory analyst and eventually became a full-time medical technologist at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, followed by a stint at the Whidden Memorial Hospital, and finally finishing her career at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Ann Marie worked in the MGH Immunopathology unit and was in charge of processing the ANCA test for diagnosis of ANCA-associated vasculitis (an autoimmune disease affecting small blood vessels in the body). Ann Marie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011 and subsequently underwent chemotherapy off and on for the next 6 years before passing away in 2017. Even through most of her treatment, she hardly missed a day of work as it was something she looked forward to everyday.

Ann Marie was a lifelong Medford resident from the Wellington area. Her two daughters grew up in the Medford Public School system and graduated from Medford High School and still reside in Medford today. Even though neither of them shares their mother’s keen interest in science and medicine, they both committed to their educations and careers simply because she found such joy in hers. Ann Marie was very interested in medical research, the human body and advancements in scientific research and was even published in a medical journal for her work in vasculitis.
