My New Wheelchair Fund
Donation protected
OK, deep breath. Here goes...
After being born almost three months premature, I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy affecting my legs and didn't learn to walk until I was at school. When I was 13 years old, I was told that without surgery, I'd be confined to a wheelchair by the time I was 30. So I underwent massive leg surgery and had to learn to walk again. Twice.
But then, my life was unexpectedly turned upside down by chronic illness which meant I could not do all the rehabilitation necessary to fully benefit from the surgery... or do much at all for ten years. At my worst I was in unable to walk more than a few steps and barely left the house.
So in many ways, it seems a little backwards for me to be asking for donations for a new wheelchair now, when I am well and CAN walk!
However, the reality is, doing so still requires 3 - 4 times more energy than the average person and the things I can now enjoy personally and professionally - travelling, shopping, meeting people (with the occasional dancing included!) - are all made quicker and easier when I use a chair.
It is NOT comfortable for me to ask for such a thing. I'd much rather ask for help with a creative project (if anything!) but this past year, I've been reaching another level of self-acceptance and have realized even more deeply that how I move around does not define me, and that asking people to invest in a new wheelchair, does not mean I am saying goodbye to any chance of miracles, nor am I throwing what mobility I have away.
I am simply asking for help in manifesting something that will make my life easier, more comfortable AND, if I'm entirely honest, a little more stylish than I can be with the standard chair I have had for years! (OK, I want to help the world and feel pretty doing so! LOL)
I am not exactly sure what wheelchair I'll be able to buy yet. But I'll keep you posted and assure you that any donations wll be used for a wheelchair, crutches or anything else that will help me MOVE!!!
Here's to big dreams come true in my 35th year - starting with this one! Yay!
Thank you so much for your help. Anything you feel guided to give will be received with HUGE gratitude and much love.
