Anti-Cancer Fund for Cary West & Family

In early 2019, Cary West underwent an emergency surgery to have his appendix removed, believing it was simply routine appendicitis. During his recovery, he was informed by the doctor that they had found cancer in his appendix. Appendiceal cancer is rare and the doctors believed that by removing a section of his colon, they would eliminate the spread of any cancer. Unfortunately, the procedure was unsuccessful and he was re-admitted six hours later for another emergency surgery. Cary was out from work with an ileostomy bag for almost three months. By late summer 2019 and seemingly recovered, he went in for his fourth surgery to have the bag removed and was informed that the cancer was in remission. Cary was glad to be feeling better and to be able to work and enjoy life again. At the close of 2019, Cary and his wife were presented with an exciting opportunity to start a new adventure in Kansas City, which they gladly accepted.

2020 began well enough for Cary and his wife, just like many of us in this world. They loved their new home and the new city they were in. Cary was thoroughly enjoying his new job as a design engineer for an innovative experience design and tech firm. But around March, when all the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdowns had just began to unfold, Cary was starting to experience recurring pain in his abdominal area that progressively became worse. By early May, he had to take a leave of absence from work. After weeks of pain and concern, Cary was able to see an oncologist who gave the unfortunate news that the cancer had returned in the form of numerous large tumors in his abdominal region. Based on the timeline of the cancer and its rapid spread, it was deemed aggressive and they began discussing possible ways to treat the cancer as soon as possible. The tumors were too large to try chemotherapy first, and they decided that they were going to attempt to surgically remove them followed by the administration of 'hot chemo'. A lot of it was hypothetical and would depend on what they found when they began surgery, but there was the possibility Cary could wake up with another ileostomy bag and a huge portion of his abdominal wall removed that would need plastic surgery and skin grafts from his legs and muscles. They told him he might be in the hospital recovering for months and that it was possible that he would have to continue chemotherapy afterwards, and with the ongoing threat of COVID-19, it was unlikely any visitors would be allowed. With no other options, the procedure was scheduled for June 4th. It was later postponed to a couple weeks later due to the pandemic.

The day of Cary's surgery came and what they found was much worse than they could have imagined. The tumors were so widespread that they had to make the decision to not continue with removing them because Cary simply would not survive. Cary has since been recovering from the surgery and waiting for more answers.

Cary West is an unforgettable person and friend. He does his best to have an uplifting and positive attitude all the time. Quick with a joke, knowledgeable about many crafts and always willing to help you in your time of need. This GoFundMe is created to provide some financial support for Cary West and his family in their time of need.
