Apalachicola's Historic Squares
Tax deductible
The charming historic town of Apalachicola, Florida, the seat of Franklin County, was incorporated in 1831, one of the oldest in Florida. Its plat, modeled after Philadelphia's, consists of blocks and squares with alleys running up the center of each block. Its six original squares miraculously are largely still intact but most have been bisected by streets creating intersections in the middle of them, and worse, a few have had inappropriate "improvements" placed on portions of these squares that detract and interfere with their intended purpose.
The goal of our fund raising is to raise money to restore the squares to their original purpose and configuration. One initial objective is to define the boundaries of the squares with visible markers so that all will know where they are. Another is to develop a map tour of the squares that will enlighten all to their location and historic significance.. Our long range goal is to re-route the streets AROUND, not through, these squares as before to enable them to become gathering places for the public with something appropriately historic in the center of each one.
I represent and am working with a local non-profit, Historic Apalachicola Foundation, Inc., a 501C3, which has adopted this project. Your contributions will help help us restore our squares. Thanks for considering our project and helping us preserve the unique and historic heritage of this town.
