Apartment Fire - All Lost, Asking for Help
Donation protected
My name is Leigha Filips, and I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan with my fiance, Trevor Bourdeau, and our dog, Otis. We lived in a new apartment complex that was newly built in 2020, the year we moved into our unit.
Early Saturday morning, March 19, we were woken up from a deep sleep around 4 a.m. Police sirens were heard, and all I heard was another resident screaming, "FIRE!! Get out!!” No fire alarms or smoke alarms were going off in our building, and none ever went off (from my experience and knowledge). We grabbed our coats, wallets, and our dog and ran out of the building. As we exited the building, we turned to see the building already engulfed in flames, pictured above. This picture was taken immediately after we left our home. Nothing woke us up besides the cries of other residents. Firefighters finally arrived on the scene shortly after and put out the flames for hours. We had no other choice but to watch our home burn.
We are thankfully alive and well, although the building is completely uninhabitable and in ruins, see the story here: https://www.woodtv.com/news/kent-county/crews-battle-fire-at-standale-apartment-complex/.
Trevor and I are asking, from the bottom of your hearts, to do whatever you can to help us. We left with only the clothes on our backs, our phones, and wallets, and we appreciate all the support and kindness you have to help us get through this. We thank you all in advance for anything you can do for us, it means a great deal.
With love,
Leigha and Trevor
